So over the years I\u2019ve built up a list of useful sources for \nvarious design stuff that is creative commons, open source, public \ndomain, or royalty free. This month I present this list to you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Copy Express Web 2 Print<br><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You\n want a simple tool to get all kinds of things made up, from business \ncards to posters? Then this is your one stop solution. While it\u2019s no \nreplacement for a professional designer, when you need to get something \ntogether quickly and know it will be printed right then you can go \nwrong. &nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/copyexpress.onprintshop.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Check it out here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Fonts<br><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fontsquirrel.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Font Squirrel<\/a><br>This\n is my go to place for fonts. While they don\u2019t carry the big name \nbrands, they always have alternatives that look almost the same and are \nfree to use.<br><\/li><li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dafont.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">DaFont<\/a><br><\/li><li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.abstractfonts.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Abstract Fonts<\/a><br><\/li><li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fontspace.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Fontspace<\/a><br><\/li><li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/fonts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Google Fonts<\/a>&nbsp;<br>While these fonts are designed for online use, they do work in print just fine.<br><\/li><li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.identifont.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Identifont<\/a>&nbsp;<br>A\n commercial font site but it can help you identify fonts from someone \nelse&#8217;s design by answering a series of questions or give you \nalternatives to an existing fonts.<br><\/li><li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.myfonts.com\/WhatTheFont\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">What the Font<\/a><br>It\u2019s\n a commercial font website but I use the \u2018what the font\u2019 tools for \nfiguring out what a font could be when I\u2019m trying to recreate a \ncustomer\u2019s design<br><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Clipart &#8211; Photographic and Vector<br><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li> <a href=\"http:\/\/openclipart.org\/\"> Open Clipart.ORG <br><\/a>\n The quality of the artwork can be a bit variable, and searching for \nitems can be pot luck but they often have clipart on subjects that the \nother suppliers don\u2019t<\/li><li> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pexels.com\/\"> Pexels<\/a><\/li><li> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stocksnap.io\/\"> StockSnap<\/a><\/li><li> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pixabay.com\/\"> Pixabay<\/a><\/li><li> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unsplash.com\/\"> Unsplash<\/a><\/li><li> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gratisography.com\/\"> Gratisography<\/a><\/li><li> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.negativespace.co\/\"> Negative Space<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.isorepublic.com\/\">ISO Republic<\/a><\/li><li> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.picjumbo.com\/\"> Pic Jumbo<\/a><\/li><li> <a href=\"http:\/\/nos.twnsnd.co\/\"> New Old Stock Photos<\/a><\/li><li> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vector.me\/\"> Vector Me<\/a><\/li><li> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.retrovectors.com\/\"> Retro Vectors<\/a><\/li><li> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.qvectors.net\/\"> QVectors<\/a><\/li><li> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vectorportal.com\/\"> Vector Portal<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vecteezy.com\/\"> Vecteezy<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Textures for backgrounds and fills<br><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li> <a href=\"http:\/\/subtlepatterns.com\/\"> Subtle Patterns.com <br><\/a> More for websites but still useful.<\/li><li> <a href=\"http:\/\/texturer.com\/\"> Texturer<\/a><\/li><li> <a href=\"http:\/\/thepatternlibrary.com\/\"> Pattern Library<\/a><\/li><li> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.textureking.com\/\"> Texture King<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.transparenttextures.com\/\"> Transparent Textures<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">General &#8211; for all kinds of stuff<br><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li> <a href=\"https:\/\/commons.wikimedia.org\/\"> Wikimedia Commons <br><\/a>this\n is the media arm of the wikipedia, full all sorts of stuff but some of \nit is excluded from commercial use so read the licensing details before \nyou download.<\/li><li> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.freebiesgallery.com\/\"> Freebies Gallery<\/a><\/li><li> <a href=\"http:\/\/archives.govt.nz\/\"> The National Archives <br><\/a>you have to dig some times but it\u2019s one best resources for New Zealand related material<\/li><li><a href=\"http:\/\/natlib.govt.nz\/\">The National Library of New Zealand<\/a><br>I never cease to be amazed to find what they have made available for public use that\u2019s just a mouse click away<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Applications to design work with<br><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.libreoffice.org\/\"> Libre Office <br><\/a>\n The open sourced alternative to MS Office that has a basic but still \nuseful desktop publishing tool in the form of the draw module. While it \ndoes ask for donation, you don\u2019t have to make one to download and use \nit.<\/li><li> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.getpaint.net\/index.html\"> Paint Dot Net <br><\/a> Nowhere near the power of Photoshop and nowhere near the complexity to use. I use it all the time for quick image editing.<\/li><li> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gimp.org\/\"> Gimp <br><\/a>\n The open sourced alternative to Photoshop that\u2019s free and in some ways \nmore powerful thanks to the huge range of addons you can install. It\u2019s \ninterface can take a while to get use to but there are plug-ins that let\n you change to act like different programs<\/li><li> <a href=\"https:\/\/inkscape.org\/\"> Inkscape <br><\/a>\n The alternative to Adobes\u2019 Illustrator, it\u2019s still under active \ndevelopment so it has some quirks but I\u2019ve found it can do some things a\n few clicks that can take minutes with Adobe.<\/li><li> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scribus.net\/\"> Scribus <br><\/a>\n Being the open source alternative to Adobes\u2019 Indesign desktop \npublishing program, it\u2019s a powerful design tool that can do everything \nfrom simple flyers to complex books. It does have a bit of a learning \ncurve but when you understand it, it&#8217;s quite logical to use.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This\n is not the be all and end all of the resources that I call on when \ndoing design work, but it\u2019s a good starting point for people like \nyourself.
